What a Load of Bull!

I came across a story this morning, about a bull on his way to a slaughter house who had other ideas. NO WAY was he going to end up on someone's plate, so he made a break for it - and got pretty far - even making a mockery of the local police. But, in the end, the beast was shot with sedation and taken back to the slaughter house. Now, here is where it gets unfortunate. Because the bull had been injected with a sedative, he could not be slaughtered for food, according to the FDA. So he was "killed and thrown out." Thrown out where?! I assure you that S would never be able to move the garbage can down the driveway if there was a dead bull in it. Where was said bull "thrown"? Was he made a pair of cement shoes? Is he resting peacefully beside Jimmy Hoffa? Seriously, am I to understand that there was nothing else the authorities could have done with this bull?

I understand the FDA concerns about the sedative being in the bull's system and thus, he would not be suitable to be eaten..But to just throw it away seems so cold and heartless...What do you think? See the story below..

PATERSON, N.J. -- A 1,400-pound bull took a several-block run down city streets Monday morning after escaping from a slaughterhouse, but it wasn't able to elude its fate even after sending police on a half-hour chase.

The bull was being unloaded from a truck into ENA Meat Packing Inc. when it broke loose just before 8:30 a.m., said Paterson's chief animal control officer, John DeCando.

"Instead of him going into his cage, he went down East Seventh," he said. "He was running rampant and was just exhausted."

The driver of a cattle truck opened a side door to the truck to push the bull out the back of the vehicle, but it ran out the door. A crowd of meatpacking workers followed close behind.

"We were just trying to scare him back," said Steve Moneusse, who works at the plant.

Crowds of local workers came out to take pictures of the bizarre chase.

"Oh my God, I was scared," said Steve Fostok, who had dropped off metal at a nearby scrap yard. "He was coming this way. He was running back and forth. It was very confusing for the cops. It could have killed me."

At one point, the bull ran into a loading dock next to the East Seventh Street Promotions factory, knocking over a garbage bin and running into cars.

"It was like the running of the bulls around here for an hour," said Jeffrey Klein, the promotional company's owner. "He was probably scared he was going to be ground chuck."

Slaughterhouse workers and police used a rope to lasso the bull, but it dragged more than five officers and workers behind it. Officers then tried to use their vehicles to block its path, but it maneuvered around them.

Finally, police wrapped the rope around a light post in another area and DeCando, the animal control officer, injected it with a sedative, which took about three or four minutes to kick in.

"Police did a fantastic job corralling him," DeCando said. "The adrenaline in that bull is unbelievable."

Workers loaded the bull onto a palette and drove it back to the meatpacking company on a forklift. Because the FDA requires all animals to be healthy and walk into a slaughter area -- and because the beast was drugged -- it was killed and thrown out, workers said.

"That's sad," Klein said. "It's watching something like that that makes you consider being a vegetarian."
