Last night, S and I went to his parents house for dinner. We have L and D on Wednesdays and we generally head up to the in laws for dinner.
After a yummy dinner of linguine with clam sauce, salad and garlic bread, with the kids safely playing computer games, all heck broke loose. It would seem that S and his folks are diametrically opposed in their political views. There was yelling and wild gesturing between the warring parents and son. They were debating (loudly) the merits (or lack thereof) of VP candidate Sarah Palin. I took a step back and watched - not getting involved - mostly because I couldn't get a word in.
It made the giggle but at the same time disturbed me..Why must political conversations/debates melt into an all out brawl? Apparently, this happens in the family every four years when there is a presidential race. I know what my views are for this race and I see no need to get into a heated debate. Though I have gotten into it with my dad from time to time, I prefer not to.
As it was getting close to the kids bedtimes, I kept trying to intercede. Finally, I went into the office where L and D were laughing at the yelling grown ups. I explained that grown ups sometimes yell about politics, but they aren't mad at each other. I further tryed to explain that one does not necessarily have to vote with ones party. I wonder how much a 9 and 10 year old understand, or even care about politics....SO L went in to the war room and announced that he was tired. PERFECT..I high 5ed him - he got the grown ups to stop yelling....
This presidential race is the most exciting and historic of, I believe, my lifetime..I do enjoy hearing about both sides and other views than my own. Why must we yell about it though? DO NOT forget to vote, especially you women, those suffragettes went through alot to ensure our right to vote.. PS..The above photo is from Maine...AAHHHH....
